Colorado Wastewater Project

Colorado health officials, scientists and wastewater utilities are teaming up to search for signs of COVID-19 in what you flush down the toilet. John Putnam with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says sampling wastewater could provide an early-warning system for communities about potential outbreaks before they happen. Utilities collect samples before wastewater enters their plant for treatment. Scientists then evaluate the amount of COVID-19 in those samples and determine the level of infection.
