Prowers County Level Orange
Prowers County has moved to level orange today on the COVID-19 dial. During the past two weeks, Prowers County has seen a decrease in cases and its positivity rate, with 39 total cases from Dec. 22-29. The move allows indoor dining at restaurants to resume at 25% or 50 people, whichever is fewer. Last call is now 10 p.m. Other changes to the Orange Level include: Personal Gatherings: Up to 10 people from no more than two households. Gyms and Fitness centers: 25% capacity or 25 people indoors, whichever is fewer; along with Indoor Events/Entertainment such as bowling Alleys or Movie Theaters at 25% or 50 people. More than 2 dozen Colorado counties have been moved from level red at the start of 2021.
Paint and Connect Home Rehabilitation
The City of Las Animas, in partnership with the Bent County Development Foundation, has created a housing rehabilitation program for residents within the Las Animas City limits. This program will focus on providing exterior house improvements such as painting, light landscaping, and property cleanup. The rehabilitation opportunity is available to all Las Animas residents; however, seniors over the age of 60, homeowners on a fixed income, veterans, or homeowners with disabilities will be primarily considered. Kit Carson Swap Shop
Kit Carson School District will host their 1st annual Clothing Swap event at the Kit Carson Auxiliary Gym. Participants may drop off their gently used, clean clothes at the gym on Friday, January 8th from 5-7pm. On Saturday January 9th, participants may take any clothes they’d like for free from 9:30am-noon. Masks must be worn during the event at all times and the event is open to the Community.
Southeast Colorado Schools
As many Southeast Colorado students return to school for the second semester, Las Animas school district reminds drivers to look out for school busses and students. Wiley will begin classes without a remote option, similar to other schools with 100% in person learning. Otero county school district superintendent says “ I cannot begin to thank everyone in our community enough for the support, understanding, patience, and general common decency”. Otero county students will begin their second semester January 11, 2021.
Colorado has a new U.S. Senator in Washington. Democratic Senator John Hickenlooper took his oath of office over the weekend. The former Colorado governor defeated Republican Cory Gardner in the November election. Hickenlooper begins his time at Capitol Hill as several Senate Republicans have said they intend to challenge the results of the Electoral College on January 6th.
At a time when many Coloradans are not sure where their next paycheck is coming from, help is finally on the way. Many Coloradans with direct deposit saw $600 in their account this week. Colorado Financial Planner Jamie Bartel shares some helpful tips. Individuals making less than $75,000 are eligible for the payments. The IRS has until January 15th, 2021 to distribute all stimulus payments.
