Colorado Employees Furlough
Most Colorado state workers will have to take furlough days before the fiscal year is over due to the financial fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Jared Polis says furlough days will be mandatory for any state worker making more than 50-thousand dollars a year. The number of furlough days will be relative to a worker's annual salary. Certain jobs are exempt, including state workers assisting Coloradans with unemployment and those who are necessary for public safety and road work.
A bipartisan group of Colorado state lawmakers have launched a campaign to repeal the Gallagher Amendment. The amendment maintains a 45-to-55 split of the state's property taxes, with homeowners paying 45-percent and nonresidential properties paying the rest. Pueblo Democratic Representative Daneya Esgar says that split will put a strain on state service following the pandemic. Republican Representative Dan Soper says a repeal of the Gallagher Amendment is a lifeline for Colorado's rural communities. If Amendment B passes, the property tax rate from homeowners will be locked in place for three years. That would give the Legislature more time to come up with a new funding formula.
