El Paso County Traffic Data

El Paso County drivers are getting into deadly crashes more often than other counties in Colorado. Information from the Colorado State Patrol and the state Department of Transportation shows that 84 people died in crashes in the county last year. That's the highest number in the state, with second-place Adams County well behind with 53 traffic deaths. Speed may be a big contributor to some of those deadly crashes. El Paso County also led the state in citations and charges for excessive speed last year.

Bent County Recreation Basketball League

Bent County Youth Recreation Basketball Leagues are expected to begin Monday February 1st for kindergarten-6th grade. This season will be modified due to COV Level Orange guidelines and the fee for the league is set at $35 per player and $25 per additional player. Youth Basketball fees for Bent county may be paid to the Bent County Community Center. Coaches are also needed for the youth basketball league and may call Robert/ at 719.662.1235. Colorado Early COVID-19 Relief

Governor Jared Polis is expressing optimism that Colorado could be nearing the end of the pandemic. Governor Polis says Colorado and the country can reach that level if COVID-19 vaccine production ramps up. President Biden announced yesterday the federal government would purchase an additional 200-million total doses of vaccinations from Pfizer and Moderna. Colorado teachers, child care workers and other essential workers are still on track to receive their first doses in March.


Counterfeit Super Bowl Tickets

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is warning Kansas City Chiefs fans to be on the lookout for counterfeit Super Bowl tickets and merchandise. Schmidt says fans need to be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true, and he noted that fans should check merchandise for the official NFL hologram shield. The attorney general says officials in the Kansas City area last year reported phone scams that offered discounted Super Bowl tickets online.

Kansas COVID-19 Data

Kansas officials are addressing COVID-19 data discrepancies between the state and the CDC. Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Lee Norman told lawmakers yesterday that the state and federal government use different reporting programs to track the number of COVID-19 vaccines that are distributed and dispensed. The state's data page shows Kansas close to the national average for vaccine distribution, while the CDC shows Kansas ranked much lower.

Kansas Prison Outbreak

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is working to determine if a new, more contagious strain of COVID-19 is at a prison. State officials say 69 inmates and eight staff members at the Winfield Correctional Facility have tested positive for the virus. Officials say the virus started with food services workers, and it spread very fast to other segments of the prison.
